Who we are

Lev canyoning in Baños, Ecuador!

Sonrisa Española was founded by Lev Meyers, a Spanish speaker who once struggled with Spanish classes in high school. Lev understands what it feels like to barely get by in class or feel lost in the complexities of learning a new language, and that experience inspired him to create Sonrisa Española. After studying Spanish for three years in high school, Lev decided to take his learning more seriously, completing advanced 300-level Spanish courses at Colorado State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. Alongside his formal education, he has self-studied Spanish for four years and spent extended time traveling through Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Spain, and Mexico, gaining a deep appreciation for how the language is used in real life.

Through this journey, Lev has developed effective strategies and techniques that help his students learn faster and with greater confidence. He tailors his teaching methods to each student’s needs and personality, drawing from Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to emphasize meaningful, student-centered conversations and tasks based on individual interests and goals. Lev also incorporates the Structural Approach, Total Physical Response (TPR), and AI-enhanced learning to make every lesson engaging, practical, and effective.

Lev has developed a range of personalized learning tools based on his own challenges and discoveries, such as grammar cheat sheets, spaced-repetition flashcards, and interactive practice materials. He also uses a variety of proven external tools and resources to ensure lessons are comprehensive, efficient, and enjoyable. Join Sonrisa Española and make your Spanish learning journey more enjoyable, understandable, and practical!
